NORTH MUSKOKA
Muskoka becomes a true winter wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts. The slopes at Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area in Huntsville served as the training ground for Olympic gold medallist Dara Howell, while there are also excellent trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Skate through the forest trails at Arrowhead Provincial Park or on the rinks and lakes throughout the area. Horse-drawn sleigh rides can be booked through Huntsville’s Back of Beyond Equine Centre, while Algonquin Outfitters rents fat bikes for snow cycling. After a day on the slopes, ice, or trails, it’s a treat to relax in front of a fire or at the spa at your resort or hotel. The shops in Muskoka take special care to select interesting merchandise for the Christmas shoppers, while the area’s chefs create appealing seasonal menus.
SOUTH MUSKOKA
Muskoka Outfitters in Bracebridge offers a variety of winter adventures, including ice climbing on the frozen waterfalls. Johnston’s Marsh in Bala features snowshoe rentals for their cranberry trails, followed by cheese and wine tasting by the firepit. The art galleries are open year-round, while Bracebridge’s new Sportsplex features an eight-lane swimming pool, leisure pool, therapy pool and waterslide in the Aquatic Centre; a second-level indoor walking/running track; a gymnastic centre and fitness studio; and a rock climbing wall. The Sportsplex is also home to the Christmas Show and Sale presented by the artists of Muskoka Arts & Crafts. The annual Gravenhurst Winter Carnival is a time-honoured tradition, with snow sculptures, lake skating, bed races, and community activities.
